Van is a local Sydney Singer Songwriter with a body of work that is pop but with a mix of blues, rnb, indie, groove and folk. Quietly experimenting with storytelling and a quirky, introspective look towards life’s ups and downs, he is forever on a quest to find the right marriage between melody and lyric. Always trying to make it a fun experience for those that watch or listen to the show, he likes to explore the possibilities of a catchy tune or riff.
His solo debut album, "I think I know" was launched April 29th 2005 at V Bar Sydney CBD. His second album "persistence" was launched to a capacity crowd at The Vanguard, Newtown 6th March 2007. His third album "another way" is a live acoustic album recorded on 2nd June 2007 released at Ruby Rabbit on 27th October 2007. Together is his fourth album and is a duets/collaborations project with other Sydney singer songwriters, released on itunes late 2008. “Yeah I Know” is his fifth independent album, two years in the making he begun this project back in the Philippines in mid 2009 on the back of a controversial major label signing that fell through. Not to let his hopes down he independently recorded this project at Springfield Studios in Sydney, mixed it in Boston Massachusetts USA at Fader Vu Studios and mastered it in Portland Oregan USA. “Hey Wait Stay” is his sixth independent album, a solo acoustic album more raw, rootsy form of pop, going back to basics concentrating on the purity of the storytelling, a jazzy fusion of urban roots and smooth groove. Officially launched on October 3 at Burwood RSL, 2014. Gratitude is his seventh album (itunes release date early January 2016). With a new line up and a collection of sonicly varied tunes, Van explores an array of different topics from depression, the death penalty, World War 2 and even a Japanese nuclear power plant. Not afraid to branch out to other styles, this collection of songs shows a different side to his songwriting. Currently working on his 8th album, tonight Van will be featuring the best of his older material, and quite possibly road test a couple of new songs slated for the new album, soon to be released. |
Shanty Club started in Berlin when Sydney comedian Carlo Ritchie invited a Canadian sailor and an Australian architect over for a lamb dinner. Booze was drunk, songs were sung and so much fun was had they decided to make it a weekly tradition.
Once it became too big for Ritchie’s kitchen it found a home in a local bar, and then accompanied Ritchie back to Australia where the Dock decided they were up for hosting some melodic landlubbers. The club has struck a chord with Redfern residents and a fair portion of the university and comedy scene. Each week all and sundry bunk in together to clap, holla and fumble their way through renditions of ‘Barrett’s Privateers’, ‘Molly Malone’, ‘Spanish Ladies’, ‘Haul Away Joe’, ‘The Shores of Botany Bay’, ‘Don’t Forget Your Old Shipmates and ‘Seven Drunken Nights’. Ritchie and his assistants – mostly local musos and comedians – take care of the verses, but once the crowd gets a handle on the chorus they just about blow the roof off the place. Who knew Monday nights could be this much fun?
