Jane Germain’s musical journey has taken her from her hometown, Sydney, to Western Australia, Tasmania and all the way back to her Chinese heritage (her Manchurian great-grandmother married a Scottish missionary).
She’s played all the styles from folk to funk, blues to bluegrass, rock to roots that express her
emotions and musicality in a career that’s won five WA Music Awards (and one Tasmanian
Songwriting Award), WA Arts funded headline tours of regional WA, a residency in Beijing awarded by the Australia–China Council (where she collaborated with Beijing based traditional Mongolian musicians, Hanggai on her album, Chinese Whispers) and an invitation for her to represent Australia at the 2010 World Expo in China.
Jane has recorded 6 albums, as well as being in high demand as a session player on other
projects. She plays guitar and clawhammer banjo – and swaps between instruments.
Jane was invited to be a part of the great Banjo Babes International Ltd Calendar in 2018. She is the first Australian artist to be included and features as Ms May – www.banjobabescalendar.com
Jane’s song Listen to What You Know was presented with the Tasmanian Composers Festival
– Song of the Year award, and her latest album, Home on the Hill has received rave reviews
(and was awarded Independent Album of the Year at the Western Australian Music Awards in 2018). Jane has started recording her new album, to be released early in 2024.
Jane also covers a wide variety of artists – her strong interpretations of songs are coupled with a driving rhythm that keeps all audiences happy!
Fiddle player, John Lee will be joining Jane on stage at Manly Fig. He is an Australian-American fiddle player, originally from Georgia and New York City, who has been playing in various bands in Sydney for the past 20 years. His background is American and Irish folk music, but more often than not, he works with singer songwriters, cover duo’s and pop/rock bands.
What music gets crowds of all ages up off their asses and onto the dance floor? Soul, Funk, Blues, & Roots that’s what.
Hard–blowin’ horn man Jason Bruer has played with some of the genres’ masters & giants from BBking & Eric Clapton to Sting & Madness, to Dr John & Jeff Beck, to Martha & The Vandellas & Stevie Winwood.
He’s learned the secrets of their grooves from the inside and has transferred the lessons to create the Soul Roots Revival Band, a funky-as-dirt, testifying unit on a mission to get crowds dancing, singing, drinking, partying & pumping.
Jason’s all star, hand picked 8 piece band featuring twin threat, soul drenched vocal duo Glenn Cunningham and Bek Jensen celebrates the immortal straight-to-the-heart genius of Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Earth Wind & Fire, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Tower of Power and others. Some of the songs will be classics whose deep lyrics are instantly remembered and treasured; others, obscure killer-tracks that you’ll hear once, wish you’d heard before and never forget again.
With exciting new arrangements by Jason Bruer and powerhouse horn section lines driven by Adam Ventouras’s gut-palpitating bass, Sam Boyd’s testifying organ and piano, Andy Byrnes deep drum groove & Ramsay McInnes skanking guitar, the unit integrates totally-loved familiarity with a freshness, heart and passion that takes your breath away. As joyous as new love, as powerful as heartbreak, as propulsive as a mighty engine, The Soul-Roots
experience is a total happening – the perfect pathway to
personal participation in the funkiest music of our era.
