V-Tribe

Mick on Wheels

Fiona Boyes

This is VTribe’s 5th show at The Fig because we love them. This talented family of musicians’ dreams began as kids enduring long hour practice sessions in their living room under the direction of their father – an acclaimed artist in his own right – who taught them that music would be their way of life. From humble beginnings playing numerous gigs without pay to opening acts at major international events VTRIBE have come along way with no sign of slowing down. Bursting onto the social scene in 2005 they quickly set themselves apart from other bands with their unique style and individual sound. Often affectionately joking that they’re “Bringing their Tongan backyard tunes to the main stage!” they are adored by fans for their down to earth nature and funky style peformances. VTRIBE’S sound is a specialized blend ROOTS ROCK REGGAE all wrapped up into the one dynamic show! As special guest to artists for the likes of award winning Fiji, Katchafire, Nesian Mystik, Adeaze, Jboog, Ardijah and Australia’s 2007 Urban Music Award Winner, Red Room they are quickly gaining the entertainment industry recognition that they have worked so hard to achieve. VTRIBE HIGHLIGHTS * 1st Runners up the “GLOBAL BATTLE OF THE BANDS” (03/11/10) * Front man Joseph Vaivao featured at the NRL Rugby League World Cup, reciting the anthem. * Winners of the Stage 2 Battle of the Bands ‘BEST IN THE WEST’. *Featured as one of the main acts in the Oceana Festival for World Youth Day 2008.

Mick’s powerhouse vocals and magnetic stage presence have wowed audiences since 1997, proving that great music knows no limits. With a vocal range that commands Rock, Pop, R&B, Jazz, Blues, Funk, and Soul, he has performed across Australia and around the world, sharing stages and bills with icons like Human Nature, Rex Goh (Air Supply), Mark Williams (Dragon), Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo), Jackie Love, Guy Sebastian, Doc Neeson (The Angels), Mark Gable (The Choirboys), and Peter Northcote. In 2014, Mick earned a rare standing ovation from all four judges on The X Factor Australia. In 2022, he moved a crowd of 40,000 at the SCG with a powerful ANZAC Day performance of You’ll Never Walk Alone. A fixture on the blues festival circuit, he’s featured at Goulburn Blues Festival, Sydney Blues & Roots Festival, Cronulla Jazz & Blues Festival, and Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival. He’s also known for stirring renditions of the Australian National Anthem at major sporting events & Australia Day celebrations.
Australia’s 1st lady of the blues. With 8 USA Blues Music Award nominations, career tour dates in 20 countries, and her recent induction into the Blues Victoria Hall of Fame, Fiona Boyes is a relentless and curious musical explorer. Fiona plays deep Blues, influenced by a myriad of traditional regional styles and has carved an international reputation as a blues guitarist, bandleader, vocalist and songwriter. Winner of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, USA, she is also a Blues Blast Music Award winner and former Port Fairy Folk Festival Artist of the Year. Fiona’s new album ‘Ramblified’ is her 13th release. Fiona’s nomination for the Koko Taylor Award (Best Traditional Female Artist) at the 2019 USA Blues Music Awards in Memphis was her 8th BMA nomination over various categories since 2007. Fiona is the only Australian ever to be nominated for these awards, which are considered to be the Grammies of the Blues. Equally at home on acoustic or electric guitars, her mostly original repertoire is like a Blues travelogue. Listen to her play and you’ll hear Delta slide guitar, single chord Mississippi Hills grooves, intricate country blues finger picking, along with material drawn from the classic blues sounds of New Orleans, Chicago and Memphis. As her friend and mentor, the late, great Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf’s guitarist) said. ‘She’s got it! I’ve played with all of them – and she’s got it!’
